Kaokoland Day 2: Passing by the iconic Red Drum. Kaokoland is one of the most remote regions in Africa so there are no road signs or cities to guide you. Many years ago someone put out colored drums to mark a few roads and help people navigate and store petrol.

Kaokoland Day 2: while driving through a tiny remote Himba village, some boys throw a large rock at us. Thank goodness we have smash and grab film or the window would have shattered.....and we would have had a big problem

Kaokoland Day 2 : Joubert's pass, a short but steep climb which is always nerve wracking because we are so overloaded and Garrett hates driving inclines with a stick! This is an easier alternative to the popular Van Zyls Pass which we had to forgo because we need a few things fixed before Boomie gets further beaten up on such a remote and extreme 4x4 road

Opuwo, Namibia is home to the most striking interface of traditional and modern African culture that I have seen. Numerous different tribes reside in this region and you will find the streets bustling with women sporting their full traditional garb. Suprisingly, you'll also find these women enjoying all the conviences of modern life - grocery shopping, visiting the bank, eating fast food....etc. it is wonderfully unexpected and amazing. Ruacana Falls is one of the largest waterfalls in Africa but usually is dry due to the hydroelectric dam built upstream. I think Roan antelope might be my new favorite animal! I love their elf-like ears and face coloring that looks like it could have been painted on. We were lucky to see some larger herds of this extremely rare antelope - but man were they shy! They would run at the slightest sound of a car approaching. We made the decision to visit Khaudum National Park instead of Etosha in Namibia. We loved Ngepi Camp in the Caprivi Strip. Beautiful campsites along the Okavango River and a cool backpacker vibe. My favorite part was the ablultions - 12 different themed showers and toilets throughout the lodge.
